Professor Peter Byass
LAUNCH OF GLOBAL HEALTH ACTION SPECIAL ISSUE IN MEMORY OF PROFESSOR PETER BYASS APRIL 5TH 2022, 0930-1230 CET
On August 16th, 2020, the world suddenly lost one of the great advocates and practitioners of data science for global health – Professor Peter Byass. As a tribute to his work, a special issue of Global Health Action will be launched on April 5th, 2022 – the very journal that Peter helped to create. The 8 articles in the SI focus on key issues for the capture and use of data in low-and-middle-income countries which occupied Peter in his thirty-year career: from health and demographic surveillance systems, to verbal and social autopsy of deaths, to emerging issues of climate change and of the Zika virus, right through to current data challenges in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The launch will be delivered through an online webinar, hosted by Umeå University – one of Peter’s academic homes. The opening tribute will be given by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Professor Stig Wall, followed by an overview of the Special Issue. The lead authors of the 8 articles will present summaries, with facilitated Q&A sessions, including opportunities for students of global health from around the world to pose questions.
More information on the programme and short biographies of the speakers and chairs will be posted.
